1. Why do you dislike #11 so much?
It squicks me because it's a violations of so many levels of trust. Misato isn't just his CO, she's his mother/sister figure and his guardian to boot. The power balance is so completely lopsided in Misato's favor, it isn't healthy. Would anyone root for Asuka/Kaji? Hell no.
2. Who do you know that ships #13?
Avocado Love mentioned it on the Rare/Crackship Exchange, and I've seen it pop up here and there. Zuko/Yue is a fairly rare ship. There's only one major fanfic for it -- "Duty" -- and it's a deadfic.
3. What would be your ideal scenario for couple #3?
If I had one for Maiko, I think it'd be that they only really get to know each other after the coup of Ba Sing Se. I've written them as a childhood sweethearts in one fic, but I'm warming to the interpretation that has them really only being passingly familiar with each other through Azula pre-BSS. It feels less like destiny/inevitability and more like a real relationship, one struck up by circumstance and convenience.
4. What is your favorite moment for #1?
The Tent Scene. And Sokka wearing a necklace of flowers the neck morning. Because if I just met my sweetheart after a hellish few months and a daring jailbreak, I'd totally get laid five minutes after my Dad was out of the picture.
5. How long have you been following couple #6?
Not too long. There isn't a lot of Zuki out there, and what is there is either very short, smut, or incidental to another ship (Mai/Sokka).
6. What's the story with #8? What made you stop caring?
Because Rei/Shinji writers never play up the fact she's a HALF-CLONE OF HIS MOM or deal with her non-humanness. They just make Rei into a woobie, or suddenly emotional basketcase, and will often change her ancestry. It spoiled the ship for me.
7. Which ship do you prefer - #2 or #4?
#2. There's so much great Asuka/Shinji fic out there. Which is part of the reason I'll never write it. Everything that could be said about that ship has been.
8. You have the power to make one ship non-existent. Choose from #10 or #12.
#12. Zutara is boring as hell, and invites so much OOCness it's not funny, but the ship has potential if people would just get past the surface-level 'forbidden romance' layer. How would Katara deal with isolation in Fire Nation courtly life? How would Aang respond if the Fire Nation was heading towards civil war because Zuko married Katara? And so on. Usagi/Rei is always just yuri smut. I've never seen a writer sell me on it any more than I've seen a decent Mamoru/Other pairing.
9. What interests you about #14?
It's the other major Aang ship but no author has written the definitive fic for it. Taang is usually an excuse to pair off Aang in the event of Zutara. I want to read their story. How does Toph mature from a bratty kid to a teenager/adult? (These are actually my favorite bits to write in FMB, showing Toph's arc from shit-kicking cute bruiser to retired sour knight.) How would she and Aang raise their kids? How would their marriage go down, considering the Avatar is marrying the heiress to a vast fortune?
10. When did you stop liking #7?
When it got to be overplayed. In practically every Fix Fic for Evangelion, Ritsuko and Maya pair off. Maya is Ritsuko's happy ending, no ifs ands or buts.
11. Did your waning interest in #9 kill your interest in the series?
No. I was never really heavily into HP. I didn't really care at all, either way, about Harry/Ginny in canon. When I got into HP fanfic I read a few really good Harry/Ginny fics that sold the ship on me and really made a vivid character out of Ginny from what little we know from canon. But those same fics tended to idealize the romance, and after exposure to several 'perfect Ginny' fics I got sick of the pairing. Nowadays I only read HP fics for the plot.
12. What's a song that reminds you of #5?
"You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the Rolling Stones.
13. Which of these ships do you love the most right now?
Suki/Sokka. Which is odd because I haven't written any fic for it. But I like the pairing.
14. Which do you dislike the most?
Misato/Shinji. It squicks me deeply.
15. If you could have any of these pairings double date, who would they be?
Zuko/Suki and Aang/Toph. Katara and Sokka can look into the restaurant from the cold, snowy outside.
16. Have #2 kissed yet?
Yes. And it was horrible.
17. Did #4 have a happy ending? Do you think one is likely?
No. If there was anything more than subtext, it ended badly when Azula went insane and Ty Lee immediately hightailed it to Kyoshi Island with no apparent intention of returning.
18. What would make you start shipping #14?
A good story for it.
19. If only one could happen, which would you prefer - #2 or #6?
#2. If Shinji and Asuka had worked out their issues enough to have a functional relationship with another human being, a lot of people could have avoided a lot of suffering.
20. You have the power to decide the fate of #10. What happens to them?
Zuko and Katara marry. There's a anti-Katara, pro-peace coup of the government. Aang and the White Lotus choose to pick the least awful option and don't fight a civil war over an inevitable half-Water Tribe child taking the throne. Zuko is ousted as Fire Lord and the two of them are sent into exile in Ba Sing Se.

For pairings 10-12 gve me a fic summary of a way it would be done that would work or be acceptable (AU's are fine). As a additional rule, it has to have a happy ending, dark fics showing a crappy pairing don't count.

#3: Zuko/Mai -- Echoing the above objection, I'm not fond of the fandom trope of Zuko 'thawing' Mai. It reeks of the healing power of cock.
#4: Ty Lee/Azula -- Is there such a thing as the healing power of the clitoris? If so, then Ty Lee using it to redeem Azula. Also the fandom tends to minimize Azula's shortcomings and negative traits in romance fics.
#5: Mamoru/Ami -- Ami's pretty Sue-ish in canon. Giving her the lead male character in the show just ups that.
#6: Zuko/Suki -- Again, Suki's a thin character.
#10: Zuko/Katara -- Aang gets defrosted a few years early, befriends Lu Ten like he did Zuko in canon, and ends up defeating Azulon/Ozai/Iroh and ending the war. In order to solidify the fragile peace, and to eliminate rival claims to his throne, Lu Ten marries off his cousins to important foreigners. Azula gets engaged to Sokka, the son of the SWT's chieftain, and Zuko to Toph Bei Fong. But when Toph runs off, Zuko must track her down with the help of his sister, future brother-in-law, and future sister-in-law. Over the course of wacky hi-jinks through the post-war Earth Kingdom, Zuko and Katara fall in love but won't admit it. When they finally catch up with Toph, she's running with the Freedom Fighters. They take the foursome prisoner, but they escape in time to stop Jet's dastardly plot to blow up a dam and then they convince Toph that Jet's no good. Toph performs a hostile takeover of the Freedom Fighters and fires Jet. The foursome agree to fake Toph's death in the flood so at least one of them doesn't have their lives decided by the Avatar and the Fire Lord (both of whom have *clearly* forgotten, in their collective opinion, what it means to be young). Sokka and Azula have bonded through the crisis. Katara and Zuko decide to pursue an engagement once Toph has been properly "mourned". But then Zuko returns to the Fire Nation to find the Avatar waiting for him, ready to introduce Princess Yue, but overcoming that obstacle waits for the sequel.

Date: 2011-01-13 04:40 am (UTC)#11: Misato/Shinji -- Misato gets pulled through time during the Second Impact, reappearing around the Angel attacks. She doesn't exist as an adult in the present day and is thought to have been killed alongside the rest of the Katsuragi Expedition. Shinji finds an injured Misato at the train station in Episode 1. After several days, Misato disappears Brigadoon-style. Each time Misato returns to a freezing snowfield, but only for a few minutes. They continue a friendship throughout the Angel War, with Misato's reappearances happy events that foretell an imminent Angel attack, with Misato grieving over her dead father. Eventually, as Misato recovers physically and emotionally, Shinji becomes more fragile from the Angel fights. Finally, in the eleventh hour, it's revealed that Misato is actually a lifeline thrown through time by ADAM in an instant before the Second Impact as a means to escape (but it failed for ADAM, accidentally allowing Misato alone to travel through time, drawn to ADAM's children at the zenith of their might). With Tabris dead and the JSSDF storming the Geo-Front, a vengeful Ritsuko and Kaji (who here heads the Operations Division) put Misato into Unit-01's entry plug alongside Shinji while Asuka, in Unit-02, buys them precious seconds by holding back the MP Series. Through technobable, Shinji and Unit-01 travel back in time with Misato. Shinji fights ADAM and manages to avert the Second Impact.
We close out with Misato and Shinji in the entry plug, standing in the middle of Antarctica, realizing that SEELE is still out there in the year 2000. But of course they have one small advantage... a two hundred meter tall unbeatable war machine with an unlimited power supply. And Misato has a few ideas about how to apply its military potential.
#12: Usagi/Rei -- Hrm... well, let's just plain make Usagi in love with Rei. Make the whole fic about screwing destiny/fate/whatever. She loved Mamoru in her past life? Great! That was her past life. Here, now, she's in love with her best friend. They're not princesses anymore. They're themselves. Go Team Free Will! (Okay, less elaborate then the first two, but 2/3 isn't bad, right?)

11. I can see how this reflects what you said earlier. In order for the ship to work, Misato can't be the guardian, nor in positions of power. Keeping them the same age does wonders, but you also have to keep them the same mental age. Misato deaging doesn't help anything on it's own, because the primary violation of trust are social mental power struggles, not the physical age difference.
12. Honestly, this was about the lenght I was expecting, but full on fic ideas. Just what would need to be done to make a story where the pairing could work for you.

This. So hard. I've liked fics that use baby!Maiko in some way, but I just don't believe it happened that way, and likely, Mai never thought Zuko would come back. If Zuko really had romantic interest in Mai, we likely would have seen evidence of it "Zuko Alone."
My solution- Zuko crushed on Ty Lee as a kid. Mai wound up sighing a lot, Azula thought it grand entertainment, and Ty Lee was very confused. Then, after Azula killed Aang, Zuko discovered he liked goths. Weird, how much he changed.
Anyway, I considered doing this meme, but then I realized that some people might take the Transformers shippings seriously.

Date: 2011-01-14 04:07 am (UTC)I've like the idea that Zuko's interest in Mai is partly due to her complete resistance to indulge in bullshit. She's the anti-Azula that way, and returning to courtly life after three years in the real world would incline him towards finding somebody who just says what they mean (and doesn't preface the statement with a comment about aura colors).
There's actually a very nice fic called Sozin's Bay that explores baby!Maiko during the pre-Aang portion of Zuko's banishment. It's very restrained for a ship-centric fic and there's a sad, bittersweet vibe to the story. All the characters (including Mai and Zuko) are very upfront with the fact they'd never be able to carry on a substantive relationship, and that Mai would never be allowed to join him in exile.
