You bastard.

I'll go back and modify the original instructions. Ask me about a character in a fandom I've written, like AtLA or Evangelion.

I don't write Doctor Who fanfic, and am not really into its fandom. Please pick someone from either Evangelion or Avatar.

+ OTP for them.

Yui/Gendo. For reasons stated below in the Gendo response.

+ Runner-up pairing.

Yui/Fuyutsuki. If only because of the May/December angle.

+ Honorable mention(s).

Got nothing here.

+ Crack pairing(s).

Yui/Shinji. Oedipus? What's that?

Yui/Asuka. Yui would totally screw with Asuka's mind, but she'd fill a weird void inside Asuka.

+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't. (alternately: ship I like that everyone else seems to hate)

I don't have likes or dislikes with Yui ships, but I'd say my biggest problem is the idea of making Yui an innocent. She's totally not. I'd even go so far as to say that she's the mastermind behind everything that happens in canon.

"[...]my biggest problem is the idea of making Yui an innocent. She's totally not."
I fully agree on this...

"I'd even go so far as to say that she's the mastermind behind everything that happens in canon."
...but not on this. The whole NEG storyline is to complicated to actually have been masterminded by anybody that is not part of what is happening and can direct the "plan" when something unexpected happens. But than again the whole premise of NGE has a huge plot hole in it.

Mai from ATLA

+ OTP for them.

Mai/Zuko. She doesn't coddle his bad habits like Iroh did, instead kicking him when he's angsting or being a dick. Zuko's good for her because he's not phony and couldn't pull it off if he tried. For someone like Mai, raised to keep a mask on and trained by Azula to be an uncomplaining toady, having a partner who's always genuine cuts through a lot of issues.

I've grown to prefer the "only vaguely familiar with each other until BSS" school of thought about them instead of the "steadfast childhood sweethearts" one.

+ Runner-up pairing.

Mai/Sokka. Mostly because of Loopy's fics. They both bring the sarcasm and love bladed weapons. The disparity of their stations is also intriguing. I could see Mai having to make a left-handed marriage to Sokka if they ever tied the knot.

+ Honorable mention(s).

Mai/Ty Lee. I've seen this done from the "damaged survivors" angle, that they get together because of their scars from Azula and the trauma they went through together. That said, I've never seen an outright romantic MaiLee fic that I liked. I prefer mine with a scoop of "effed up in the head".

+ Crack pairing(s).

Mai/Aang. Uncommon pairing, sadly, with little written for it. Aang would give her the unvarnished love she needs while Mai would keep him tethered to reality.

+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't. (alternately: ship I like that everyone else seems to hate)

Mai/Katara. I see this sometimes with OT3s or, less commonly, in yuri fics, but I just can't see them working together. They're almost antithetical to each other in every regard. They'd get on like a grease fire and a kitchen. In my head canon, I've never thought of them as ever becoming friends. They'd politely tolerate each other for Zuko's sake.

+ OTP for them.

Gendo/Yui. It's either a very loving and redeeming relationship pre-death, or a mutually exploitative relationship between two magnificent bastards. Well, one magnificent bastard and Gendo.

+ Runner-up pairing.

Gendo/Kozo. They're both love's Yui's bitch, but at least Fuyutsuki knows it. Doing Gendo would also be Fuyutsuki's way of being with Yui. If he can't have her, he'll have the man that was with her.

+ Honorable mention(s).

Gendo/Rei. Creepy as hell, but scarily believable. I can see Gendo projecting a lot of his feelings of Yui onto Rei, and Rei doesn't even know how to begin processing Gendo's emotions and actions.

+ Crack pairing(s).

Gendo/Misato. Because he's laid every other command level staff member at NERV HQ, and she'll be redirecting inappropriate feelings about Shinji and her father into an affair with Gendo. Unlike the Akagis, Misato would also have no illusions about how little their liaisons amount to.

+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't. (alternately: ship I like that everyone else seems to hate)

Gendo/Ritsuko as anything genuinely healthy. It pops up now and again, but I just can't see them ever having a functional relationship. They're both far too messed up.

+ OTP for them.

Azula/Sokka. I like how they'd keep each other mentally engaged and physically challenged.

+ Runner-up pairing.

Azula/Ty Lee. Only of either the light-'n-fluffy or the darkfic variety. Fluffy-wise, I like how their flanderized personalities bounce off each other. Darkfic-wise, I like the twisted idea of Ty Lee coming to love her abuser and, hopefully, of eventually breaking free of her forever.

+ Honorable mention(s).

Azula/Zuko. Yes, firecest. However, I like the pairing when it's Zuko who tops Azula. The dynamic of them struggling for control and playing mind games is pretty awesome.

+ Crack pairing(s).

Azula/Azula. Let's face it, this is the only pairing that would ever make canon Azula happy.

Azula/Joo Dee. I could easily see a twisted tale of Azula deciding to see how far she can push Joo Dee's ability to follow any order. Let's face it. That's what Azula would want out of a partner.

+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't. (alternately: ship I like that everyone else seems to hate)

Non-fluffy, non-darkfic TyZula. I like my TyZula of one extreme or the other, not in-between. Why? Because Ty Lee is most definitely not Azula's friend in canon. If Azula is remotely in-character, their relationship is FAR from romantic. Ty Lee was constantly terrorized and kept under Azula's thumb. There's a reason that the first thing Ty Lee did after getting out of prison was to join the Kyoshi Warriors, a team of highly capable fighters who'd be taking Ty Lee far away to the Earth Kingdom. Being Azula's friend had it's advantages but, unlike Mai, I think Ty Lee wasn't the sort to explicitly consider how she got some fringe benefits from serving Azula. TyZula fans will point to Ty Lee's flattering and mock-flirting with Azula in "The Beach" but, again, that's a terrified Ty Lee trying to appease the girl who can snuff her out with a whim.

+ OTP for them.

Aang/Katara. I guess this is my OTP for Aang by default? Honestly, I have no problem with the pairing, and I get how they complement and support each other, but... it just doesn't interest me. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've ever written an actual Kataang fic.

+ Runner-up pairing.

Aang/Mai. There's not a whole lot of this pairing, but what I have seen here and there is interesting. I think Aang being open with his heart would be a relief, if an occasionally annoying one, to Mai after her upbringing. He make her laugh. She'd keep him grounded. Aang's lifestyle as the Avatar would also keep Mai in relative comfort while still providing stimulation. Mai could help Aang think a bit more politically about things and help with negotiations. (I also like the idea that Tenzin and all future Air Nomads would carry knives in memory of their reborn nation's mother.)

+ Honorable mention(s).

Aang/Ty Lee. I've seen this teased once or twice but there's not much long fic about TyLaang. I like them being fun together, but I think there's potential to explore "life after suffering" with them. They've managed to both be cheerful and optimistic after soul-killing childhood events (Aang's people's genocide, Ty Lee's emotionally abusive friendship with Azula). At the end of the day they haven't let the bad days change them, and that's interesting to me. I feel like I tend towards too much darkness and cynicism in my writing, so TyLaang would be an opportunity to explore the good that comes after the bad without having to wallow in the bad. As a counterexample, Maiko futurefic tends towards the couple being haunted by their pasts. Kataang fic always seems to have a Spiderman-esq undertone of "she's marrying the Avatar, not just Aang". TyLaang would be most like Sukka, I feel; accepting the past and moving onwards.

Aang/Hama-Wu-Ursa-Kanna-Kya-Insert Name Here-etc. -- Aang defrosting early offers a lot of opportunities for non-squicky crackships that can explore canon adults in different circumstances. In Siege of the South, I had a lot of fun with messing around with Aang/Hama and how Hama was similar/different than Katara.

+ Crack pairing(s).

Aang/Suki. I actually have an outline for a Suaang fic that I've never written more than the prologue for. I think it's appealing to me for 1) the clash of their opposing yet traditionalist cultures, 2) how Suki would handle Aang being a reincarnation of Avatar Kyoshi. Squaring the circle with them would be an interesting experiment.

+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't. (alternately: ship I like that everyone else seems to hate)

Aang/Toph. I don't like how it's a "pair the spares" ship for Zutara. I also can't really picture them in an adult relationship. They'd enable each other in the worst way. Aang procrastinates like nothing else and Toph will avoid confronting anything that personally bothers her so long as she has a relative degree of escape/release. That makes for a couple who'll let minor personal problems fester until they explode.

+ OTP for them.

Toji/Kensuke. Evangelion's bromatic pairing. Considering how effed up everyone's relationships are in that show, having a better than functional friendship is a pretty remarkable achievement. Their personalities play off each other well.

+ Runner-up pairing.

Toji/Hikari. Not in a "forever ever" thing, but I like them as a school age couple. I don't see them lasting forever but I think their relationship would have been healthy learning experience for them both. If not for, y'know, the whole maiming thing.

+ Honorable mention(s).

Toji/Asuka. I toyed with this in Taking Sights, but I don't honestly see it being likely. Asuka's all about father substitutes, and Toji doesn't even have Shinji's battlefield heroism to impress her. However... Toji would at least *kiss* her if he got the invitations, unlike Shinji. So they'd have an awesomely shallow physical relationship but it wouldn't last. So like Toji/Hikari, really.

+ Crack pairing(s).

Toji/Misato. Solely because of the Mrs. Robinson aspect.

+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't. (alternately: ship I like that everyone else seems to hate)

Can't say I really have anything to go here for Toji.

+ OTP for them.

Suki/Sokka. I like how they make each other a better person, and their inevitable problems of managing a relationship across nations and cultures are interesting. I also like how they aren't predestinted lovers or childhood friends. If not for a very odd and specific set of circumstances, they never would have met -- or ever met again, for that matter.

+ Runner-up pairing.

Suki/Zuko. Yes, I know, a big surprise coming from me. ^_^ They're very handsome together and, of all the non-FN characters, Suki is the most (faintly) plausable as someone who could be more than a mistress. While she's not nobility, she's also not a water/earthbender. Their combined warrior upbringing and sense of duty/honor gives them a connection.

+ Honorable mention(s).

Suki/Ty Lee. I've come to think of Suki as basically the "good" version of Azula. If the fire princess hadn't been a noble or a bender, she'd probably have grown up into someone like Suki (if a bit more clever). Prideful, not good about taking criticism, but still a charismatic leader and skillful warrior. With that perspective in mind, I can see Suki/Ty Lee as being a healthy, non-crackfic/darkfic version of TyZula.

Suki/Aang. For reasons explained when I answered about him.

+ Crack pairing(s).

Suki/Sokka/Toph. Mostly just for teh hotness. I think Sokka would probably be the hardest sell on a OT3. The Water Tribe strikes me as being very protective of what it considers family.

Suki/Katara. On the rare end of the femslash spectrum, although that's probably because Katara doesn't have the fandom bicycle appeal that Sokka and Zuko do. I think that the Kyoshi Island lifestyle would be uber-attractive to Katara, and Katara's innate toughness to be warrior would appeal to Suki.

+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't. (alternately: ship I like that everyone else seems to hate)

Sukka gets a lot of hate. Partly due to people thinking Sokka should be with Toph. (On a side note, my big problem with Tokka is that people generally write her like she's an eternal twelve year old.) Partly also due to the fact Suki doesn't feature a lot of the show and has little development on-screen.

+ OTP for them.

Ursa/Ozai. I like the concept of an arranged marriage that grows into something loving, only to sour and turn bitter over their children.

+ Runner-up pairing.

Ursa/Hakoda. A bit of a cliche pairing, but they'd look good together and it's fun to imagine the Fire and Water sibs as step-siblings.

+ Honorable mention(s).

Ursa/Zhao, mostly because I like that idea that Zhao used to be into Zuko's Mom and hates him just for existing.

+ Crack pairing(s).

Ursa/Ty Lee, but only as a one-sided unrequited crush coming from Ty Lee.

+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't. (alternately: ship I like that everyone else seems to hate)

Ursa/Iroh. I find them very boring together, and don't like the reveal you see some fanfic authors occasionally pull where Iroh is Zuko's real biological father. *zzzzZZZzzzz*

While I agree about Zuko secretly being Iroh's son, I actually rather enjoyed a fic that turned the idea on it's head with Azula actually being Iroh's daughter.

I remember that fic. I had the same problem with it that I did with Voldemort's origin story in Harry Potter. Voldemort is born bad because he's essentially a child of rape, while Azula is a 'punishment' for Iroh and Ursa's affair.

I assumed that was Iroh's own believe. He's rather big on family based destiny. Zuko is good because of Ursa's blood, bad because of Sozin's. His view of Azula was colored by that. (I vastly prefer falible Iroh to all knowing allways right Iroh)

I could see that. Iroh's a born and bred monarchist, after all. Bloodlines and ancestry are big to them.

[Speaking of, one day I'll have to write a drabble or something as a prequel to 'Korra', where Iroh hears about the Republic City proposal/project (or whatever) and is very adamant that this democracy nonsense is the road to ruin. "Be rational, nephew! Peasants can't govern themselves!"]

Fallible Iroh is always a plus. So is fallible Pathik.

Huh. "Republic City prosposal/project"...suddenly brought to mind Experimental Prototype Republic-city Of Tomorrow."

Now I can't help but wonder who the founder is, and if his pencil-moustached head is kept frozen beneath the pirate district; or if there's a white geodesic "Steamship Earth" sphere crowned with twelve sun-ray spires.

+ OTP for them.

Asuka/Shinji. I know, I know. Cliche pairing. There have been some wonderful fics written about them. I'd never write Asuka/Shinji myself, but that's only because I think far better writers than me have done the pairing and said everything that can be said about it.

+ Runner-up pairing.

Don't have one.

+ Honorable mention(s).

Don't have one.

+ Crack pairing(s).

Asuka/Hikari. This is one of those "I'd love to write it one day" pairings for me. I think there's all sorts of wonderfully messy business with them: a friendship that becomes something more, Asuka finding herself drawn into a relationship that doesn't mark her as a subject of universal praise, and Hikari dealing with blowback at school.

+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't. (alternately: ship I like that everyone else seems to hate)

Don't have one. I hate Asuka/Kaji, but that's hardly a popular ship to begin with.
