I've joined the AU Big Bang. If you're curious about what that is, check out their FAQ... or check out this completed Doctor Who Big Bang.

I debated for a few days about which AU project of mine I wanted to do for it, but I eventually settled on two ideas. Right now I'm intending to do with a Suki-centric AtLA fic called The Bastard of Kyoshi Island, though I -may- cop out and end up doing a Katara-centric fic that would either be called The Death of Adabito or The Boy is the Father of the Man. The premises for these two AUs would be:

The Bastard of Kyoshi Island: What if Suki had been a firebender? (The premise is based on an off-cuff joke in the series finale.)
The Death of Adabito: What if Hakoda had found Katara a waterbending master? (The master's name is not Hama.)

If you're a fanfic writer or a fan artist, check out the AU Big Bang. Sign ups are open until February 2.

I'd actually wouldn't have heard about it if not for your entry, so *hat tip*.

Haha, I'm just glad to see familiar fandoms. For a while there I was going, "I feel out of place!" in the face of non-animated/non-video game fandoms. Clearly this is a sign that I should watch more TV.

(Although it looks like your Doctor Who Big Bang link goes straight back to the AU Big Bang.)

I know what you mean. I was surprised there's so much CSI fanfic out there. Who knew?

(Also, I fixed that Doctor Who Big Bang link. Thanks for the heads up.)

Wow, that looks really cool, shame I don't have any Au's that would come even remotely close to 15k. Personally suki as a firebender sounds like it has more story potential, (but that could just be my love of angst)

I've actually started outline the Firebender Suki story, because I realized the Adabito story needed more time for mental marination (although the Adabito story *will* be the most utterly dark and angsty AtLA fic when it's done, possibly even out angst-ing the unparalleled darkfic "When All Your Dreams Come True") and because I just got inspired on how to write Suki's story.

I've been sitting on this Suki AU for a long time. I was very reluctant to write it because I hate the idea of using rape as backstory. It's nearly impossible to do tastefully, and I myself always hate it when I come across the trope in fanfic. But then an alternative non-rape, non-"Good German" solution for Suki's parentage popped into my head over dinner tonight and I just sat down and started writing the whole multi-page story outline in one go...

...and then checked my email and the Avatar Spirt forum on a lark and spent the next hour and a half writing a post for your Balkanized-verse thread.

I get sidetracked easily. ;)

Back to work outlining! Firebender Suki's immense self-loathing isn't going to take care of itself!

And I am so glad you did, that idea was a thing of beauty.

And out angsting "All your dreams?" so I'm assuming Suki comes to a bad end then? I hope not, I'm a wimp about bad endings. Read or written. The only two fic ideas I've had that I was really planning bad/semi-bad ends were prequel fics, so their was still hope.

Though oddly I'm not obsessed with good ones either, given last Firebender ends with the protagonist winning, but you also know that the words still endsup fighting wars, the air nomads become a discriminated minority.

Can firebenders burn themselves? Sort of like cutting in the real world?

The Adabito "Katara grows up with a master" story has the dark feeling to it, not the Suki one. In a way it's sort of a 'darkfic from the outside'. I can't really explain more without getting into major spoilers.

"Bastard of Kyoshi Island" pretty much sticks to canon, more or less, though there are some differences in 'Crossroads of Destiny' and 'Day of the Black Sun' where Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors are participants in this AU. Suki gets a fairly happy ending.

Sorry, didn't get the email for the response so I didn't realize you'd responded.

Now I'm sort of curious about the Katara, one. I'm guessing that no master means no Aang waking up. And all the fun that entails. (you know I've actually got a Hama master fic idea I posted in the tribbles thread...... wonder if I could get that to clock in around 15k..... mind I discuss it with you via avatarspirit.net pm or email? (whichever you prefer)
