The next chapters of "Taking Sights" and "The Ineffable Crossover" are coming along nicely, though it's still about two weeks before TS will pop. In the meanwhile, here's another installement of my occasional blog feature, "A Potpourri of Fanfiction".

 Gods and Demons by TheGodfatherSJP

Series: HALO / Battlestar Galactica

Synopsis: After the events of HALO 3, Master Chief crash-lands on Cylon-occupied Caprica. From there, he hooks up with some familiar faces...

Snip-it:

He blinked. Things snapped into focus. “John, wake up!” Cortana pleaded.

The woman was the Cylon Number Six, this time dressed in white. She leaned forward, and clasped his helmet with both hands. “Are you alive?” She asked.

His arms were tightly held by another Sharon and a male brunette.

“Are you?” He replied.

The male struck him on the back of the head. “You’ve done a lot of damage here today, you freak.”

“This thing is not human. It can’t be.” The Asian Cylon said.

“Yet it helps them. It is an enemy of god.” The blonde replied.

“Perhaps it doesn’t know of their crimes. It’s spent much time with them.”

“No crime justifies genocide.” The Chief spoke.

“The sins of humanity justify their extinction,” the blonde woman replied. “We carry out god’s will. We are humanity’s children, and all children, in time, replace their parents. Who are you to stand in the way of destiny?”

“Let’s kill this creature and be done with it.” The brunette said.

“Not until we find out more about it!” The Sharon copy argued.

“What am I?” The Chief interrupted. “I am a warrior who has defied gods and demons. I am humanity’s shield; I am its sword. I have killed thousands of enemies who stood in my way. And you? You’re just next in line!”

Why I Recommend It: Do you even need to ask?! It's HALO and BSG. That's chocolate + peanut butter, people! This sort of thing is why I read fanfic! Crazy, cracky crossovers that work! But more seriously, the story is well done and you don't need to be a fan of both series to read it (one will do).

Hands Fall Together by Kihin Ranno

Series: Sailor Moon

Synopsis: When one detail is altered, history as we knew it can be forever changed. For example, one wonders what might have happened if Luna had found Mamoru before Usagi. Could that incident mean the difference between living and dying?

Snip-it:

Mercury looked around, hoping that Luna had magically appeared. Of course, she hadn't. She probably didn't even realize that anything was wrong. And now she was all alone with a new Senshi and Mamoru was fighting the monster all by himself. For once, she didn't know what to do.

She heard a sickening crunch and whirled to look back on the fight going on in their midst. Tuxedo Kamen's hat had long been abandoned, but his mask miraculously stayed on. His cape was torn and there was a hole in his pants, but that was the least of his problems. He was covered in his own blood, and she could tell that his left eye was blackened severely. The crunch must have been the sound of his arm breaking, which now hung uselessly at his side.

"Oh, God," Mercury whispered, wishing suddenly that she was more faithful so that she could at least expect some sort of answer. "What am I supposed to do?"

Why I Recommend It: THIS is high-quality fanfic. Its descriptions are great and its dialogue is spot-on. It's also cool because the author doesn't make Mamoru into a Mary Sue (Marty Sue?). He manages to kill the monsters, but more often than not by luck and sheer bloodymindedness rather than offensive ability. He also repeatedly gets the crap kicked out of him because he's still that weak sauce Tuxedo Kamen. It plays around with canon in interesting ways, which all good AU fanfic should strive to do. The author also gives the story the feel of actually taking place in Tokyo, which is something that can't be said for a lot of fanfic.

Girl Days by Kenko

Series: Ranma 1/2

Synopsis: When Ranma's mother decides he must learn to live as a woman as well as a man, he (or rather, 'she') agrees to live as a girl for two months, becoming the world's first heterosexual lesbian.

Snip-it:

"ATTENTION TENDO DOJO! I WISH TO CHALLENGE THE REDOUBTABLE
RANMA SAOTOME TO A BOUT! IN HONOR OF THIS MATCH, I WILL SING 'THE
YELLOW ROSE OF
TEXAS' IN LITHUANIAN WHILE DOING AN IRISH JIG!"

This was, of course, completely the wrong way to go about
issuing a challenge. Especially at three o'clock in the morning.

After setting off the fireworks, which for some reason made a
picture of a potato, Kenchuro went into his performance. He sang off
key, used the wrong tune, and mistranslated the lyrics anyway. What
he called an Irish Jig was closer to Appalachian Clog Dancing,
and didn't look right in what he considered a fighting outfit.

Ranma, thankful that this was a night she could wear pajamas,
dragged on a robe and went downstairs to see what the hell was going
on, followed by the rest of the household. Excepting Genma, who
could sleep through the end of the world if he wasn't being directly
attacked or offered food.

She opened the door and stared at what seemed to be someone
in a pink gorilla outfit having some sort of spasm.

Why I Recommend It: It's funny. It is! It's funny and just really, really, silly.
