So here are three stories that have caught my eye recently…
Series: Torchwood
Synopsis: When Mayor Daley's special investigation unit, Torchwood, steals Chicago PD Officer Gwen Cooper's crime scene, she decides to find out everything she can about them. But she may get more than she bargained for when Captain Harkness -- who isn't even American! -- sends his errand boy Ian to scare her off.
Why I Recommend It: Aside from the fact that Sam the Storyteller is just an all-around f***ing great author, Second City Torchwood is one of the most brilliant AUs I've ever read. It re-imagines Torchwood as an American TV series in a world where there was never any Doctor Who. And it doesn't just write it as a straight up story, no no. It's a mix of fake scripts, fake novelizations, message board and blog posts, in-universe fanfic, and behind-the-scenes looks at the writers and creators of the show. If the real Torchwood were this good I might watch it!
Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose by Synecdochic
Series: Stargate Atlantis
Synopsis: "SGC finally stops calling him by December. Rodney celebrates by writing a final exam for his relativity class so difficult that it reduces four students to tears in the exam hall. Upon reflection, he decides to be merciful and offer partial credit." Futurefic set after the end of Stargate Atlantis dealing with the self-imposed exile of Rodney McKay. I'm constantly amazed by how much BETTER Stargate Atlantis fanfic is than the TV show itself.
Why I Recommend It: While the TV show up on which this is based sucks, Stargate Atlantis fanfic in general is often pretty damn smart and thoughtful. This story is about Rodney McKay, the caustic balding Canadian genius comic relief of the show for those of you who don't follow Atlantis, and how he comes to terms with his lost love and his own role in the Wraith's (the show's evil space vampire bad guys) xenocide.
Backward With Purpose by Alianne Of Tortall
Series: Harry Potter
Synopsis: AU. Harry, Ron, and Ginny send themselves back in time to avoid the destruction of everything they hold dear, and the deaths of everyone they love.
Why I Recommend It: This is the fanfic that got me into Harry Potter fanfic. It's well-written, romantic, has great characterization and has… wait for it… time travel. Yes, like "Taking Sights", this is a Peggy Sue story where the characters go back in time. But it's complicated by the fact that there are multiple time travelers going around so what we're reading (the fanfic) is the last timeline out of all the ones created. It sounds difficult, doesn't it? But it's actually the best use of time travel I've seen in fanfic and it's extremely easy to follow. Be warned, there's some parts with graphic violence and very suggestive sex, but the author gives you a heads up when that stuff roles around.
