Character Meme

I'm swamped trying to get my Mini-Bang, Maiko Bang, and Rare/Crack Pairing submissions done by their alloted deadlines, BUT my brain needs a bit of distraction now and again...

Via beckyh2112:

Name a character and I'll tell you three (or more) facts about them from my own personal pseudocanon.

I'll be limiting this to the AtLA and Neon Genesis Evangelion fandoms.

I'm torn between asking for one of my favorites, and someone completely off the wall...

Compromise! Give me Piandao.

Piandao

[identity profile] lavanyasix.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
1. It comes down to a choice between life as a sellsword or making a final stand somewhere. The Fire Nation will come for him if he stays in any one place for too long. He chooses to stand and possibly die in his homeland. Mercenary work might keep him alive but he's lived his whole life as the Fire Lord's servant, renting out his loyalties would be no better.

2. Azulon sends one hundred men after him. Piandao sends ninety-nine back. Their commander, Fat, he offers honorable service as an alternative to being rewarded for his failure with execution.

3. Disowned by his parents, he has no ancestral weapons to display. All the weapons featured on his walls are cheap Fire Army mass-production models in nice casings. Good for weeding out undiscerning eyes and for disposable throw-aways if his home is ever stormed again. His own swords he sells as he makes them; they're meant to be used.

1 and 3 strike me as very natural extensions of the character, but #2 surprised me. It doesn't match Fat's backstory on the old website, but it's much more compelling.

Sadly, I'll be contradicting all of these in my upcoming One Hundred Men fic.

I'll keep an eye out for it!

What the heck...I'm going to ask about your take on NGE's professor Fuyutsuki. (As opposed to the one from Avatar, of course)

1. He really did love her, even after he got to know the real her.

2. There's really no stopping Third Impact. He realizes that very early on, after joining GEHIRN. It's turtles all the way down; 'plots-within-plots' hardly describes it. Yui would say that as long as he was alive there would be hope. But that's what she would say, after all.

3. Standing on the floor of the Geo-Front, it's easy to forget the smell of oil mixed with salt water. It's so amazingly easy he almost can't believe it.

Toph- in Full Metal Bitch?

[identity profile] lavanyasix.livejournal.com 2011-03-05 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
1. While she has little involvement in politics beyond dictating Gaoling Province's de facto government in its Board of Commerce, Toph's philosophies would be considered "Clayish". She believes the Earth Kingdom's best chance for victory is for it to be rearranged along Fire Nation lines.

2. In the event of her death, there's a pre-arranged contract to ensure her parents don't enjoy the spoils of her aluminum fortune. Or much of anything else for that matter.

3. While she originally developed it as a party trick during the winter months at Ba Sing Se, Toph actually can read and write. She uses ink spiked with iron salts to make characters her earthbending can detect. Her vocabulary is fairly limited, however, because she's only been working on her literacy for about the last four years. Her calligraphy is is charitably described as functional, with her characters a mish-mash of styles carbon copied from her various tutors.

I can't decided, pick a number 1-3.

[identity profile] lavanyasix.livejournal.com 2011-03-05 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Azula is born around midnight, during a thunderstorm. The dawn drives most women carrying firebenders into labor, so nighttime births are relatively rare. Most firebenders are born during the summer dry months, so being born while it is raining is often considered a sign of weak talent -- but being born while cold-blooded fire is burning overhead is the flipside of that, so Azula is considered from a traditionalist, spiritual perspective to have been born exceptionally lucky.

2. Azula loathes her uncle. Partly this is because of her father's influence on her opinions, but mostly it's because her earliest memory of him is of Iroh being transparently flattering towards one of her nursery maids. Throughout her life she's seen him reinforce this impression by being manipulative of women's feelings to get what he wants. Azula believes that only someone who believed that all women were shallow, vapid creatures would treat them that way. It certainly explains, in her mind, why he thought sending her a dress-up doll was a good idea for a gift when Zuko, a boy, got the surrendered knife of one of Ba Sing Se's Council of Five.

3. She never planned on ultimately killing Zuko for the throne. Usurping him, yes. Making an Uncle out of him, definitely. She'd find a nice out-of-the-way colonial prefecture for him to administer so he could waste away his days playing pai-sho and growing fat. She'd even let Mai marry him, if only because she'd served Azula well enough for some reward. Azula believed that Mai wouldn't mind until her lust burned out, and even then she'd soldier on apathetically. If she got some nieces and nephews out of the deal, well, then so much the better -- her own mother was a pathetic waste, but Azula had still come from her womb. Who was to say that the two of them might not manage to produce someone of use?

4. Between the two of her friends, Ty Lee was by far the one Azula liked best. At least Ty Lee had to ambition to go out and take what she wanted from life, however undignified being a circus acrobat was.

Darn I LOOOOVE this one but its tough to pick

Still. One of my favorite minor characters. People go gaga about Azula with regards to avatar's gender approach but most adventure stories have a viscious female character as an extension. The Lord's wicked daughter. The Jezebel, etc.

Hmm. Challenge
The Zhang Leader from The Great Divide
(I love her she's so much more than she had need to be but isn't remarkable for being a woman so much as considerate barbarian leader... who's still a short sighted asshole)

I've never written the Zhang Leader. Please request a main or supporting cast character. For example, Piandao is about as low a level of notability as I'd go for this meme.

1. Bato has two sisters, both dead before their tenth birthday. He only has his memories of them. The SWT is too poor for even the ink portraits of his parents' childhood.

2. Katara is named for his mother, who died a month before Katara the Younger's birth.

3. While they're in the Fire Nation Capital, before he and the others sail for home, Bato grits his teeth and indulges in the hospitality of the Fire Lord... to commission an artist to sketch his parents and sisters from Bato's memory.

the madman himself - Gendo

[identity profile] lavanyasix.livejournal.com 2011-03-13 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
1) In 1996, during a get-together with his old co-workers from his university's branch of the Human Genome Project. His old boss drunkly confesses to him that the massive injection of funding that the Herod Corporation had given to build Naoko Akagi's gene sequencing super-computer had actually come from a group called 'SEELE'. An organization, Gendo learned, that was keen on pushing the boundaries of genetics and metaphysical biology.

2) 'Shinji' was the name of an old schoolmate from junior high. 'Rei' he just liked the sound of.

3) He didn't have any objection to adopting Yui's surname. Her family was of much higher status that his, she was her line's last survivor while he had two brothers with families of their own, and he would do anything to make her happy.
