Fan Fiction Writing Meme

01. Which is your favorite fic?
It's hard to pick one of other people's fanfic. Generally speaking, I always find myself circling back to the SGA fic Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose. In the Evangelion fandom, it'd probably be Evangelion: Redemption. In AtLA fandom, it'd probably be Final Exam as it perfectly captures that Season 1 Original Flavor.

Of my own personal fanfic, I'd say the favorite would be The Face Death Forgot

02. Which is your best-received fic?
The Fanfiction of Wan Shi Tong got tagged by a Zhao community on dA and attracted a fair number of positive reviews. I was pretty nervous about releasing the fic originally as it's pretty weird.

03. Which is your worst-received fic?
I've gotten a few negative reviews over Taking Sights, mostly because of the way Asuka takes over the fic midway through. They're totally right, too. It was badly plotted.

04. Which is your angsty-est fic?
Probably His and Her Circumstances, but it's partly a Zuko-centric fic so the angst should be expected.

05. Which is your funniest fic?
The Ineffable Crossover has some good moments in it but the rest of it in-between proves why crackfics don't work in long-form.

06. Smuttiest?
That would be all the smut I've written anonymously for the Bad Bad Bathhouse kink meme.

07. Fluffiest?
The Natural Daughter of Somebody, where Iroh spends the day with his illegitimate grand-niece.

08. Have you ever made someone cry with a fic?
Not that I know of. Reviewers have sometimes mentioned they cried over this and that, but since this is the internet hyperbole shouldn't be taken at face value.

09. Which fic frustrates you the most?
Facing Fearful Odds and Full Metal Bitch tie here. FMB because I shouldn't have given into impulse and posted Chapter 1 before I'd had the rest of the fic done, as is my normal policy with long-form fics. FFO because I still can't get goddamn Chapters 20, 23, 24, and 26 (of 26) finished after eight months of blockage. I also can't start publishing FFO until the next chapter of FMB is posted because otherwise every other reviewer will be nagging me with "Great fic! could you please update FMB soon? lol"

10. Which fic was the most fun to write?
A Pocket Guide to Ba Sing Se was great fun to write. It's rare that I pound a fic out in one or two sit-down sessions.

11. Who is your favorite OC you've ever created?
I like Midori from The Natural Daughter of Somebody. I had actually outlined a "next generation" fic for AtLA that would have starred her discovering her heritage and taking part in Cliver Cussler-esq thriller plot, but finally decided I didn't have the time to invest or personal interest in an OC-centric story.

12. Are you better at one-shot or multi-part?
Considering I've yet to finish any of my multi-part stories outside of His and Her Circumstances, I'd say one-shots.

13. What character do you think you're the best at portraying?
I think I do a fair Katara and Zuko after all the time I spent working on them in FFO. I'm starting to get a handle on Toph too.

14. What character is the most difficult to portray?
Aang. I haven't written many stories featuring him, because while I like his sunny optimism I'm a fairly cynical person myself. So it's difficult for me to get into his head.

15. Tag five other authors!
"You! And You! And you, you, and you in the back! Yes, the pink sweater!"

Thanks for the recommendation of "Final Exam." I'm twelve chapters in, and really enjoying it thus far. I'd seen the fic before, but found the Omashu Fox saga from the same author to be a little to praise-worthy of its OC main char, and even without romance, the idea of an OC teenage female handing out with Zuko set off warning bells. I'm glad to find that I was wrong about that.

And I have to say, if you have a hard time getting in Aang's head, then you do a great job of overcoming it. Your Aang is one of my favorites in fanfic, when you write him.

Completely off topic, for some reason your posts don't show up on my friends page. I discovered you did this meme by accident.

re: Final Exam -- I was initially a little leary of the story myself, since fics with OCs and Zuko are common enough on ff.net to merit a generous application of DDT. The 'no romance' tag in the summary is the only reason I gave it a shot. The prose is also very readable, which helped.

re: Aang -- I think a big reason why I find him hard to write is getting into his head. We see the homeland/life of all the other characters throughout the series, but with Aang all we get are a handful of flashbacks, so it's hard for me to figure out how he'd view things. One of my betas for FMB mentioned she was a little freaked out when Aang narrated that he'd found it odd to eat with Kuzon and his parents, as Air Nomads didn't raise their own children. (Which is... fanon? I think?)

re: your friends page -- That's probably something to do with your friends page filter. Not sure what. I've never dug into LiveJournal's features too deeply.

I admit, I'm not sure where those kiddie-book sourcebooks end and fanon begins. Certainly, nothing in the cartoon mentioned Air Nomad parents at all, but given that Aang seems to be cared for by his Temple's leadership, and that nothing is said about him being an orphan, seems to support it.

Doh, it could also be a creator interview. Let me check... nope, not the one on ASN, anyway.
